June was born on July 29, 1937, in Haworth, Oklahoma, to the late Eldon and Merle Thompson to whom she attributed her deep love for family. She attended Texas Tech University where she studied business administration and later worked for several law offices in Texas. After moving to Maryland, she began working for the Food & Drug Administration and enjoyed a prestigious 37-year career serving under 11 Chief Counsels before retiring.
While successful professionally, the role that June embraced the most was as a loving and devoted mother. She treasured the special bond with her children and taught them to believe in The Lord by always modeling Christian faith and character. She cherished every stage of motherhood, never missing an opportunity to share memory-making moments with them. Her beautiful home is filled with pictures and memorabilia of her family, a testament to the pleasure and joy they brought her.
An extension of her family were her sorority sisters of Pi Beta Phi. June joined the sorority in 1964 and built lifelong friendships with its members.
A tenacious reader from a very early age, June found time to continue her insatiable quest to learn throughout life. She also delighted in traveling with family and friends. Whether day trips to nearby historical sites or for extended stays, June relished exploring new territory and discovering all that she could absorb.
June also had a penchant to nurture her creative side. Each year, June and her mother would tackle a new craft. From macrame and needlepoint, to decoupage and latch hook rugs, they looked forward to spending time on the back porch at the old family place in Oklahoma while crafting.
June always wore a bright smile and cast a positive shadow for others. Her warm southern charm and hospitality will be forever missed by so many. We’ll find comfort in knowing how very blessed we were to have shared a part of life’s journey with such a precious and beloved individual.
June is survived by Gary Manley (son) of Dallas, TX; Melody Manley (daughter) of Crofton, MD; Susie Morehead (sister) of Atlanta, GA; Brandon and Samantha Hedrick (grandson and wife) of Ithaca, NY; Courtney Hayenga (granddaughter) of Lexington Park, MD; and preceded in death by Martha Heller (sister) of Williston, ND.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at the Redland Cemetery with Aubrey Thompson officiating.
