Donald Ray Holmes Obituary

Donald Ray Holmes, 82, passed peacefully away at home on August 18, 2024. He lived a life marked by hard work and a deep Christian faith. He was a member of the Church of Christ for over 50 years.

Born on May 27, 1942, Donald Ray grew up with a deep sense of responsibility and he understood the value of hard work. He dedicated his life to ensuring his family had everything they needed.

Donald Ray married Carolyn Lawler on June 30, 1962 and together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and faith for 62 years. He was a proud father to his son, Donny, and a doting Poppie to his granddaughter, Hannah, who brought him tremendous joy.

He was a man of few words, and a man of action! He was always fixing things around the house, tending to his large gardens and sharing his harvest with the community, 5 gallons at a time, managing two chicken houses by himself, taking care of the farm and cattle, and keeping the yard nice. His calloused hands were never idle.

Donald Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn; his son, Donny and wife, Jennifer, and a granddaughter, Hannah. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Aubrey Thompson and wife, Glenda; his nieces, DeeDee Thompson, Alesha Helms and husband, Chop, Jamie Womack and husband, PJ; great-nephews and nieces, Zac Bishop and wife, Jennifer, Josh Bishop and wife, Sarah; Rusty, Laurie and Magan Helms; great-great nephews and nieces, Blakely, Hadleigh, Reed, Boone Bishop, Tyler, Titus and Bailey Smith; a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Oletha Tackett, his father, Jack Holmes; a sister, Junell Watkins; his father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Kathleen Lawler, and a sister-in-law, Linda Thompson.

Donald Ray’s life was truly a testament to the power of love and dedication. Though he may no longer be with us, his legacy of hard work, family devotion, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Haworth Church of Christ with Aubrey Thompson officiating. Interment to follow at Haworth Cemetery.
