Geraldine "Gerry" Dodson Obituary

Geraldine Joyce (DeSpain) Dodson was born on January 2nd or 3rd, 1928 in Ardmore, OK to Roy and Zela (Blalock) DeSpain. She left her family’s arms and went to God’s arms on November 8, 2021 at the age of 93.
She married her husband, Ward, a handsome veteran of WWII on March 28, 1947.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, W.D. DeSpain, Melvin DeSpain, and Donald DeSpain; sister Wanda Brogden; sons, Randy Dodson and Doug Dodson; great grandson, Jamus Lankford; and great granddaughter, Jessa Westerman.
Survived by daughter Gail Cheek and son-in-law Bob of Broken Bow; daughters-in-law, Susan Dodson of Durant, OK, and Millie Felice of Hernando, FL; sister Imogene Eager of Riverton, FL; brother Marvin DeSpain and sister-in-law Janet of Claremore, OK; sisters-in-law Glenda DeSpain of Watonga, OK and Sue DeSpain of Southern Pines, NC; 12 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
Gerry and Ward moved to Broken Bow in 1973 after their house in Boswell, OK burned.
She was known for her good home cooking, hospitality, and fun-loving spirit. She quickly earned a place in the hearts of those around her. She served faithfully for many years in the Assembly of God Church.
Never one to shun new experiences, Gerry learned to quilt in her 60s. She went on to complete over 100 quilts, several of which won awards in competitions. After teaching herself to quilt, she taught others to quilt as well. Gerry finished her last quilt at age 90. In her late 70s, she went to Mississippi with a crew to help with clean-up after Hurricane Katrina. In her late 80s, she had three books published:  Lessons of Life, Heavenly Encounters, and Heavenly Encounters II.
Gerry was a mentor and inspired those who knew her. In her family, she was known for her corny sense of humor which her grandchildren lovingly referred to as “Granny jokes.” She was hard to beat at any game she played, especially dominoes, bananagrams, jacks, and Indian leg wrestling. She left a beautiful legacy and many happy memories behind. She invested her life in loving and serving others and will be greatly missed.
