John Lee Atterberry

John Lee Atterberry, son of Masako “Martha” Hirose and Joe Atterberry Jr, sadly passed away on February 20th, 2025, at the age of 73. Born, in Yokohama Japan, on July 12th, 1951.

John sailed to the U.S. from Japan on April 6th, 1952. Idabel has been his permanent residence ever since. On December 8th, 1972, he married Debbie Lavon McKee. Most people knew John as the sales manager at Langdon Oxygen, AirGas,  Paris Oxygen, A&W Oxygen ,Matheson, and as a member of Grace Assembly Church of Idabel. He took early retirement in 2021 on his 70th birthday. After his retirement John helped his wife Debbie at their local store in their 2nd building. John loved fast cars, racing, fishing, and hunting, but he loved nothing more than spending time with his family and spoiling the grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Masako “Martha” Hirose; father, Joe Atterberry Jr.; and his brother, Jerry Wayne Atterberry.

John leaves to cherish his memory wife, Debbie Atterberry, his dog and best friend Sam; daughter Chanda Smith and husband, John Smith; son, Shaun Atterberry; grandchildren, Hayden Smith, Heather Tempel and husband, Charley Tempel, Shaun “Lee” Atterberry Jr, Lillian “Lilly” Sneed and husband, Mark Sneed, Jaxon “Lane” Smith; great-grandchild, Iris Sneed; brother, James “Jim” Atterberry and wife, Sharon Atterberry; sister, Rebecca “Becky” Williams and husband, Steve Williams; and tons of nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Whether it’s a warm smile on a bad day, a hug at a time when you need it most, or helping friends and community members after a disaster, John will be missed by many.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, February 24, 2025 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at the Grace Assembly Church in Idabel, OK with Bro Kyle Jordan officiating. Interment to follow at the Redland Cemetery.
