Johnnie Satterfield, age 90 passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at Paris Regional Hospital in Paris, TX. She was born on July 1, 1934 in Forest Grove Community outside Idabel, OK to Ralph and Viola Maddux and lived there until she married the love of her life in 1951, Henry Satterfield. Henry was from Hugo and would hitchhike to Idabel to their house where her father would lend them his truck to go out.
After they married by eloping to DeQueen and lying about their age, Henry who had joined the Air Force and was sent overseas so she moved to Oklahoma City to finish her senior year and work before getting to join him when he returned to the states. April 3rd of this year would have been their 74th anniversary. They both loved to travel which the Air Force provided. They lived in San Antonio, Taipei, Taiwan, Big Spring, Texas, Kirchberg and Hahn AFB, Germany. They also spent time touring Germany, Holland, and Belgium.
When Henry retired, they settled back in Idabel on land they had bought in the 50’s and across the road from where she grew up. They remodeled an old house and saved money for years to build the new house they lived in until now.
She only worked outside of the home when they were first married until Margaret was born and the day Margaret called the babysitter Mommy, Johnnie quit. But don’t think she didn’t work, she starched uniforms for dad and spit shine shoes very well. She sewed our clothes and made sure we were in church every week. She fed cows, hauled hay, mowed, weedeated and performed chores while dad continued to work.
When Margaret moved back and worked, Johnnie and Henry helped raise her two sons into the men they are today. She will tell you they are good because she made them that way.
The service helped them form bonds with lifetime friends, Jerry and Jake Freeland, TX and the Hoffman family in Germany.
Johnnie was a member of the Idabel Eastern Star and had served as worthy matron at one time. She loved the sisterhood she had there. Her life was built around Henry, Margaret, and Henry. Jr. She was hurt so, when they lost Henry, Jr. and never recovered.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Viola Maddux; sister and brother-in-law, Dale and Lewis Williams; sister, Baby Girl Maddux; son, Henry Satterfield, Jr; and son-in-love, Darrel Bills.
