Rev. Elwayne Schaeffer Obituary


Rev. Elwayne Schaeffer, 84, longtime Idabel minister, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at his home in Idabel, OK. He was born on July 31, 1936 in Duncan, OK the son of JT and Addie Schaeffer. He met the love of his life Reva Brumley in the summer of 1959, and they were married just a few months later on October 3, 1959.

Rev. Schaeffer was a 1954 graduate of Empire High School. He attended Southwestern Bible Institute in Waxahachie, TX and received his bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Together he and Sis. Schaeffer devoted their life to ministry: beginning their pastoral ministry in Colorado City, TX in 1962 and over the course of next 57 years, they served churches in Arkansas, Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma. After retiring from full-time pastoring, Rev. Schaeffer continued to minister as a chaplain for the local hospital, nursing homes and jails, as well as serving as Associate Pastor at Grace Assembly in Idabel.  Additionally, a firm believer in education, he founded and served as administrator for 3 Christian schools in Oklahoma during his time of pastoring.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother who loved, cared for, and celebrated his family. 

Rev. Schaeffer was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Doyce Schaeffer; and brothers-in-law, Walter Ketchum and Curtis Newton.

Rev. Schaeffer is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Reva Schaeffer of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Theresa Schaeffer of Dardanelle, AR and Paul and Sherry Schaeffer of Sapulpa, OK; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Chuck Gaines of Idabel, OK and Mary and Trent Stuart of Mounds, OK; his sister, Darlene Newton of Idabel, OK; grandchildren, Rachel and Jeremy Bull, John and Tami Schaeffer, Amelia Schaeffer, Riley Schaeffer, Emily and Kyle Jordan, Megan and James Miles, Mariah and Alex Lynn, Makaily Stuart and Malayna Stuart; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. 

Pallbearers include: John Schaeffer, Riley Schaeffer, Jeremy Bull, Kyle Jordan, James Miles, and Alex Lynn.  Honorary Pallbearers are Floyd Harris, Fred Langley, David White, Jose Gomez and Scooter Lewis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 11, 2021 at the Grace Assembly Church with Bro. Kyle Jordan, Bro. Trent Stuart, Bro. Jeremy Bull and Bro. Alex Cooper officiating. Interment will follow at the Denison Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the Grace Assembly Church.
