Victor "Mr. Bal" Balagbagan Obituary

You have three aspects to your life: personal, professional, and spiritual. Balance is ideal. Seamless integration of the three is extraordinary, and worthy of imitation.
Victor Frazier Balagbagan passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at Texarkana, TX. He was born on March 21, 1948 to Iris Marie (Dillard) and Marcos Mufas Balagbagan.  Victor married Juanita Morgan on June 11, 1966 in Redland, OK.

Victor graduated from Redland Elementary School in 1962 and from Haworth High School in 1966. He graduated with honors from Southeastern Oklahoma State College in 1970. While there, he was President of Phi Alpha Theta, National Honor Society in History and was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in Social Studies.
Victor enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard in 1970. He was Honorably Discharged in 1976 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Victor began teaching at Haworth High School and taught there for a total of 36 years, retiring in 2010.  During his time at Haworth, he was a Teaching Principal twice. He left teaching briefly from 1972-76 and worked as a Juvenile Parole officer.  In 1973 he was nominated as one of the Outstanding Men in Oklahoma. He was the subject of a feature article, “The Balagbagan Family Chose the USA” in the December 15,1996 McCurtain Gazette. He was named Haworth Teacher of the Year in 1997 and 2007 and was nominated for History Teacher of the Year by McCurtain County Daughters of the American Revolution in 2002. He was very proud to have sponsored State Champion Academic Teams.

Victor began preaching at the age of 16 under the guidance of Brother McDougall. He preached at Tom Church of Christ, Lynn Lane Church of Christ, and then spent 40 years preaching at the Redland Church of Christ.  In 1997 he was honored by the Southeastern Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce for “many years of ministering to the spiritual needs of your community.” He performed well over 250 weddings for former students and numerous funerals for them and their families.

Victor never consciously took off his teaching hat and put on his preaching hat.  They were both a part of who he was. His students knew he was never vindictive or cruel with discipline and knew they could expect fair treatment. He loved to tease them and give them nicknames. He worried about them.  When he knew they were not receiving support or encouragement at home, he gave them extra encouragement at school and encouraged all of his students to pursue their goals whether they be trade school, military or higher education. His students knew he was a preacher, and that it was a part of who he was.

Victor was most proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Juanita.  His children, Roxanne and Michael Clark, and Kimberly and Brett Clark of Redland, Marcus Kane Balagbagan and Teresa of Holly Creek, and Katrina (Katie) and Eric Burwell of Poteau. Nine grandchildren, Peyton (Stands with a fork), RaeLeigh (Bushrat), Jenna (Twin), Victor Brett (Kiowa Kid), Makenleigh (Mud Creek Makie), Zoe (Spooky), Jaxon, Eliza (the Hobbitt), and Samantha. And three great grandchildren: Layla (Crazy Snake), Ava (Hostile or Paleface), and Leighton (Beautiful Leighton). Many cousins and family members, and a host of former students, colleagues, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 5, 2024 at the Redland Church of Christ. Interment will follow at the Redland Cemetery.
